Session I: Best Practices

Objective: Share knowledge and experiences by contributing to Best Practices database

Drawing on the results of national workshops organized by UDRO, this session will focus on

  • Showcase successful community engagement models;
  • Showcase best practices in upscaling slum upgrading on city level Asia Pacific Region; and
  • Promote interdisciplinary multi-stakeholder cooperation at different levels and across different agencies.

This session is based on the results of other preparatory workshops organized at national level. I think there will be one presentation on the results of those workshops. In another presentation, documenting a sample case will be presented and discussed. A discussion on impediments to contribution to this data base will follow.

Session II: Slum Identification Indicators

Objective: Review the lessons learnt in testing slum upgrading indicators in pilot areas for inclusion in the slum upgrading database

Drawing on the results of national pilot surveys, this session will examine:

  • Presenting and discussing the results of testing the Identification Criteria in pilot surveys;
  • Agree on a set of core identification indicators, as well as a set of additional adaptive indicators for each settlement;
  • Contributing to draft guidelines for surveys throughout the region; and
  • The inclusion of results in a slum information database.

Session III: Virtual Scientific Committee

Objective: Ways and means for expanding the level and scope of participation in the virtual scientific committee to share information and experiences

Pursuant to initial testing and review, this session will examine the final interactive prototype of the Virtual Scientific Committee interface:

  • Review impediments for successful widespread use of existing databases;
  • Discuss ways and means for promoting change of experiences and lessons learnt through Virtual Scientific Committee; and
  • Promote interdisciplinary multi-stakeholder cooperation at different levels and across different agencies.

Session IV: Slum Upgrading Indicators

Objective: Review the lessons learnt in testing slum upgrading indicators in pilot areas for inclusion in the slum upgrading database

  • The results of testing Upgrading Criteria in pilot projects;
  • A set of key indicators for assessing both output and outcome of upgrading projects;
  • Draft guidelines for calculation of SUIs throughout the region; and
  • The inclusion of results in a slum information database.

Field trip

The participants will visit slum upgrading projects (Nazi Abad Neighborhoods Slum Upgrading Projects, Tehran) during a half-day trip on Dec. 1st 2015.
